Get ready to beat the heat!

A chestnut horse in a field in the sunshine surround by greenary.

With the temperatures set to soar again here are a few handy tips to help keep your horses and ponies cool and comfortable!

  • Make sure they have constant access to fresh water whether in the field or stable.

  • Pop some waterproof suncream on their noses and/or pink bits.

  • Fly repellent!! Lots of it!

  • Make sure they have access to shelter or shade.

  • Try to ride/exercise in the coolest parts of the day so early AM or later in the evening.

  • Most horses benefit from a fly rug/sheet and mask to help keep those pesky pests from bothering them or spreading any nasty germs!

  • Make sure to allow extra time for warming up and especially cooling down to let the horse climatise themselves.

  • After exercise give them a cool down with a hose or bucket and sponge. (Make sure to check your water hasn't heated up if unsheltered)

  • Make sure you're familiar with the signs of dehydration! These are:

  • Reduced urination

  •  Dark Urine

  • Reduced droppings

  • Lethargy

  • Dull eyes

  • Gums dark in colour- More red supposed to the fleshy pink they should be!

But mostly don't forget to have fun in this lovely weather!
