Girth up.

Bay horse jumping over a hedge with rider on board.

Do you know how your girth fits? Is it comfy on your horse? Is the pressure spread evenly?

Girths, although very important, are a commonly overlooked piece of tack.

The way horses and their rib cages are shaped means most of the pressure from the girth sits on the sternum.
Good padding across the sternum also has the added benefit of lifting the girth away from the musculature either side of the sternum, allowing for easier movement from the horse.

Not every girth suits every horse. So remember to take the horses shape and movement into consideration next time you're looking for a new girth. It may take some trial and error to find one that suits for discipline and comfort.
